Robert Hays came to the Yukon with the 18th Engineers, for the construction of the Alaska Highway, in the first week of May 1942. He ran one of the small Post Exchanges for Headquarters and Service Company and moved with the Post Exchange from camp to camp as the highway progressed from Whitehorse west towards the Donjek River.
This fonds consists of 48 copy negatives and black and white reference prints, 21 x 26 cm, from photographs taken by Hays during his tenure with the 18th Engineers on the Alaska Highway Construction project in 1942. The various camps and construction sites include Whitehorse, Kluane Lake, Hayden's Homestead, Cracker Creek, Burwash and Champagne. Also included in the fonds is an eight page letter from Robert Hays to the Yukon Archives dated Sept 13, 1976 describing some of his activities with the 18th Engineers in Yukon and seven pages of captions for his photographs.
