Glossary
Afterbirth
Another word for the placenta, the tissue that joins the mother’s uterus and the fetus. It provides hormones and supplies the growing baby with water and nutrients from the mother's blood. It is expelled soon after the baby is born.

Babiche
Rawhide cut in a spiral to make a long strip. When these strips are shrunk under tension, they make very strong cords.

Boer War
(1899-1902)
The war of the South African Republic (Transvaal) and Orange Free State against Great Britain. As a member of the British Commonwealth, Canada sent troops to South Africa in support of Great Britain.

Lineage
The line of descent to or from an ancestor; a group of persons tracing descent from a common ancestor.

Linguist
A person who is skilled in languages; speaks more than one language.

Matriarch
A female head of a family or tribe.

Memoir
A written account of an author's personal experiences.

Midwife
A woman, often very knowledgeable about pregnancy and childbirth, who helps in the delivery of babies.

Prison Matron
A woman who works in a prison and is in charge of female prisoners.

Residential School
A type of boarding school, operated by churches in collaboration with the Canadian government, for First Nations and Inuit children from sparsely populated settlements.
