Department of Tourism and Culture

Museums Unit

The Museums Unit is responsible for coordinating the delivery of a variety of support services to Yukon museums, interpretive centres, First Nation cultural/heritage centres and the umbrella organization Yukon Historical and Museums Association (YHMA).

The guiding principles for this program are the Yukon Museums Systems Plan (1986), which is often referred to as the Lord Report; Yukon Museums Policy (1990), Yukon Museums Artifact Conservation Policy (1992), and most recently the Museums Strategy (2005).

The program works closely with various federal programs including the Museums Assistance Program, the Canadian Heritage Information Network, and the Canadian Conservation Institute. The program administers a funding program of capital support, and management and operations to Yukon museums, interpretive centres, First Nation cultural/heritage centres and the YHMA.

The Museums Unit also oversees the management and operation of the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre. Technical and hands on assistance is provided to the museums community by the Manager, Museums Unit, the Yukon Collections Registration Coordinator, the Yukon Conservator, and the First Nations Heritage Officer.
