Since 1989, conservation advice, treatment and collection care training have been available through the program Conservator.
Following the mandate set by the Yukon Museums Policy and Museums Artifact Conservation Policy, the Conservator works with Yukon Museum and First Nation Government staff to preserve Yukon collections. The conservation work of the program follows a priority of emergency treatment of artifacts, preventive care designed to limit or prevent deterioration and artifact stabilization.
Restoration of artifacts is done only to greatly enhance research or interpretation opportunities or to protect artifacts from structural deterioration. The program provides funds for collection storage upgrades and building improvements through the Conservation and Security Fund, manages conservation records, provides archival-grade storage supplies and maintains a conservation library open to Yukon heritage workers.
